Medicaid provides medical coverage to a range of people, including those who have high medical bills, receive Supplemental Security Income, meet specific income requirements, or have certain age and/or disability needs. MetroPlusHealth’s Medicaid coverage serves all five of New York City’s boroughs and offers a wide network of specialists and the freedom to choose your own primary care physician. It covers essentials like emergency visits, prenatal care for expectant mothers, and preventative services.

How can you get Medicaid?

If you’re eligible, you can apply to Medicaid anytime. You can make an appointment with MetroPlusHealth to check your Medicaid eligibility and sign up, if possible. If anyone in your household qualifies for Medicaid, your information will be forwarded to your state agency, who will then contact you about enrollment.

To enroll, you’ll need:

  •  Your name and date of birth
  •  Social Security number
  • Monthly payment amounts for rent/mortgage and utilities
  • Proof of citizenship or immigration status
  • Proof of income
  • Verification of any other government benefits you receive
  • Information about an insurance plan your employer has offered or that you already have

What is the eligibility for Medicaid?

Medicaid provides low-cost or free health benefits to adults and their dependents with a low income, people with disabilities, and certain other groups.
Exact eligibility requirements differ by state, so check with your state’s Medicaid agency for more specific details.

Can I use my Medicaid in another state?

Yes, but only for true emergencies. If you have a medical emergency while traveling out of state, your Medicaid card will be able to qualify you for hospital care. However, medications from out-of-state pharmacies may not be covered, and routine illnesses are not considered emergencies and will likely not be covered.

If you move out of New York state, you will need to apply for Medicaid in the new state.

What is qualified health coverage?

Qualified health coverage is an insurance plan that meets the requirements of the Affordable Care Act to be considered minimum essential coverage. Some of these requirements include:

  1. Providing essential health benefits
  2. Following established limits on cost sharing (deductibles, copayments, out-of-pocket maximums)
  3. Not denying people for pre-existing conditions, and not imposing lifetime coverage limits

These are typically purchased through the New York State of Health Marketplace by people who don’t qualify for Medicaid or the Essential Plan.

How to qualify for home health care under Medicaid?

Medicaid pays for in-home care in all 50 states. For some states, it may be as simple as qualifying for Medicaid. However, other states have their own set of eligibility requirements.

For example, New York requires an individual to meet certain income and asset requirements, as well as apply for a Long-Term Managed Care plan the same way you would apply for Medicaid.

How to get Medicaid for a newborn?

If you don’t have health insurance when you give birth, apply within 60 days of having your baby. Even if you don’t think you qualify for Medicaid based on income, you and your child may still qualify for your state’s program.

If the parent is already on Medicaid, the newborn will automatically be enrolled for the first year. After that, they need to apply for Medicaid the same as an adult would.
