Losing A Job

What To Do About Health Insurance When You Lose Your Job

Losing your job feels awful. You give up salary and benefits like a health plan. With no insurance, doctor visits and prescription drugs cost much more.

IMPORTANT NOTE

Don’t wait until you find your next job to get a new plan. It can take weeks or months to get hired. Once you do, you may not be covered for a while. Your next job might lack health insurance. Or, you could choose to work for yourself or start a business. You will need your own health coverage then. We can cover you for as long as you need it.

Stay with your old coverage

You can keep the coverage you had at your last job. A law known as COBRA can keep you covered for 18 months or more.

Pros:
● You keep the same coverage you had as you look for new work
● Access to drugs, doctor care, and emergency services

Cons:
● COBRA covers some people only. You can’t use it if you worked for the federal government, a church, or a place with fewer than 20 employees
● You have to pay more for your plan
