What does in-network mean?
Not quite sure what’s meant by “in-network”? Don’t worry, health care terms aren’t easy to understand! We’re happy to help our members learn what they need to know to make informed decisions.
Let’s start with the basics: A network refers to the doctors, specialists, facilities, and other suppliers that your health insurance plan has contracted with to offer health care services.
“In-network” means that a doctor, specialist, or other provider is a member of your health insurance’s network. Providers become members by entering into an agreement with a health insurance company to offer services at certain rates, often at a discount. This means savings for both you and the insurance company.
In-network is the opposite of out-of-network, which refers to providers and specialists who don’t have one of these rate-based agreements with your insurance company. Out-of-network providers may still accept your insurance, but the cost for care will be much higher. You often pay significantly more for services from out-of-network providers than you do for in-network providers.
Let’s get specific: When you sign up for health insurance through MetroPlusHealth, in-network providers are doctors and specialists who have agreed to charge MetroPlusHealth and its members certain rates for their services.
